NCKU reviewed to be a top university by MOU

 

Tainan, Taiwan, March 25, 2014

According to Ministry of Education (MOE) on the midterm assessment results of the “Aim for the Top University Project”, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) and National Taiwan University (NTU) have earned rave reviews from the project assessment committee who praised that both universities have already possessed enough capability to become a world-class learning institution.

NCKU revealed its ability to treasure and make full use of limited resources as well as to enhance teaching, learning and research is built on the foundation to lead the university towards becoming a top university.

To strengthen the international competitiveness of local universities, MOE will continue the “Aim for the Top University Project” where each project will be implemented for 2 years 9 months, starting from April 1this year to December 31 in 2016. 

In the process, NCKU and NTU will be given NTD3.1 billion and NTD6 billion worth of funds respectively.

In the second term of the project between April 2011 and March 2014, NCKU has been given an annual subsidy of NTD1.6 billion. 

According to news from MOE, the amount of funding for NCKU and NTU was adjusted accordingly due to the completion of targeted basic infrastructure in both universities. 

Based on the foundation and results in the first term of the project, NCKU emphasized on the development of specific unique fields and the integration of excellent teaching philosophy and innovative research capability as its main goals in order to meet the targets of the project. 

With the funding made available from the project in the second term, teaching infrastructure and software have been quickly upgraded, curriculum integration has met the expected results as well as basic facilities for internalization have been constructed. 

It has witnessed the recruitment of more and more international scholars and the nurture of excellent talents. In addition, both the quality and quantity of academic have also shown clear signs of improvement in the process.

Based on the official data from the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) international journal database in 2014, NCKU occupies the top 1% of the number of journal articles published by NCKU cited worldwide in 14 areas in the past 10 years. 

From 2003 to 2013, NCKU has officially published 23,448 academic journal articles which have been cited 179,737 times, thus placing the university in the number two position in Taiwan in this respect. 

NCKU’s academia-industry collaborations have also performed admirably in recently years, hence putting NCKU way ahead of other Taiwanese universities in this respect as well. According to Times Higher Education (THS), NCKU has been ranked among the top 10 universities in terms of academia-industry collaboration. 

Moreover, internationalization efforts in NCKU have also been as shown by its number one position in the recruitment of international students as well as its frequent interactions with the international community. 

In the context of research, NCKU emphasized efforts on the comprehensive development of research works in the first term. 

However, special focus has been placed on specific, unique cross-disciplinary research and collaboration in the second term by actively recruiting international scholars, providing a more complete and convenient research environment, building unique laboratories in various areas and upgrading the university’s animal experiment laboratory. 

All these have become vital infrastructure for the construction of an international academic and learning institution.

NCKU continuously improves through its efforts on teaching, academic research, academia-industry collaboration and internationalization. 

With the assimilation of the “Aim for the Top University Project” into the university’s development blue plan, NCKU can go on to enhance and utilize its uniqueness including its strong academia-industry collaboration capability. 

Moreover NCKU also extends its research resources and to realize the technology transfer from academic research to the industry, thus promoting the economic development of the country and improving industry competitiveness by taking on the responsibilities of a tertiary education institution.
